Jamie Iverson cuts it close around a barrel for a time of 12.81 seconds on Wednesday night at the WPRA Divisional Tour at the Black Hills Stock Show Rodeo.

Barrel racing took over the arena floor at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Wednesday night as the Women's Professional Rodeo Association Divisional Tour made its appearance at the Black Hills Stock Show Rodeo.

Fifty-seven cowgirls competed in the fast-paced, timed event, pushing their horses around the cloverleaf and back across the finish line.

Jonie Crozier of Casper, Wyo., won the event, a jacket and a check for $405.22.

With the new ruling this year, that a contestant can only compete in 50 events, adding money to one's tally becomes even more important.

Crozier's time of 12.58 seconds erased the 12.61 posted by Ashley Williams.

Crozier was the third racer from the end to run as Williams' time held up through 34 riders.

Williams replaced Angela Lockwood, who was clocked in at 12:66, out of the second starting slot.

Amber Bruce was fourth at 12.70, followed by Shelly Anzick in 12.75.

The racers randomly drew chips to determine their starting spots prior to the event.

Tyler Haugen of Sturgis drops onto the back of a steer during Thursday's opening round of the PRCA rodeo at the Black Hills Stock Show. He clocked a 15.6-second time.

Three members of the top 10, Williams, Jamie Iverson and Jessica Mueller, all attend National American University when not competing.

Eighteen racers competed their runs in under 13 seconds while 14 cowgirls had the misfortune of tipping over one or more of the barrels, which resulted in an additional five-second penalty.

The barrel racers competing at the BHSR were from three circuits, Montana, Mountain States and Badlands.

Melissa Bachand of Madison, who finished in a ninth-place tie Wednesday night, is currently second in winnings in the Badlands Circuit.

Evelyn Hohn of Sioux Falls, who also came in ninth, was ranked 70th in the final 2002 world standings.

The four money-earners from each of the 12 circuits in the United States qualify for the Divisional Tour Finals in Fort Worth, Texas, while the top 15 barrel racers head on to the National Finals Rodeo.
