The Easy Dozen Legacy

Easy Dozen arrived in Australia 1980 as an unraced 4 y/old (due to an accident) after being test bred to a mere handful of mares in the USA. He stood at stud in Queensland under the care of the W, G & L Smith families of Gin Gin for 5 seasons (92 AJC reg foals).
Each season he produced top class performers that won most of the feature races. These winners included, Aussie Dozen, Azure Jumbuck, Charge It, Don’s Dozen (Fastest qualifier TSPS** 1985), Dozen Editions (TSPS** Winner), Easy Burnett, Easy Fire, Easy Pacific, Instant Reaction (Fastest qualifier TSPS** ever, 3rd in Final, 2nd AA* Derby 1987), Legal Dozen, Magic Dozen (Aust), Pacific Dozen (AA* Derby winner & 2nd TSPS** 1987), Sure I’m Easy, Super Dozen and last but certainly not least, Top Dozen (TSPS** Winner). (These are the AJC names). These and others won over 200 races.
Due to the above average ability of his first two small crops in the USA, (14 in total), which produced 3 stakes winners, including the fastest qualifier for the All American Futurity, Easy Dozen was exported back to America in 1985, where he continued to be a contributor of quality race performers until his last crop in 1996 (1 foal).
In America his progeny amassed $2,888,450 (US), making him the 3rd All time Siring son of Easy Jet (2500 foals). He sired 9 Stakes Winners of 15 Stakes Races and 18 Stakes Place getters. He had 13 crops, 462 foals in total – 300 raced, 177 winners of 643 races (not including the Australian progeny statistics).
However, it is as a broodmare sire he will be most remembered. To date, as a maternal sire he has produced the winners of over $2,000,000 (US) and still rising. With 106 foals on the ground out of his daughters, and more crops to come, I’m sure he will continue to make his mark.
In 2002 in the USA he is 30th in the Top 100 Broodmare Sires, and 8th in the 2 y/old broodmare sire standings.
It is little wonder that in Australia he has produced the dams of 1998 All Australian Futurity and Derby winners (Casey’s Luck and Rare Edition) and again this year 2002, he is the sire of the dams of the All Australian Futurity winner (Tacka,) and Derby winner (Like a Rock) and The Dash Down Under winner (Just Shoot Me), and placegetters in the AAF and the Gympie Gold Derby.
Considering that these are probably the only Futurities or Derbies run since 1993 he couldn’t have done much better. His producing daughters of these winners are, Dozen Editions (1998 Derby and 2002 AA* Fut ), Royal Dozen (1998 AA* Fut), Top Dozen (2002 Dash Down Under and placegetter in the AA* Fut), Azure Jumbuck (2002 Derby and Gympie Gold Derby placegetter) who has also produced a good TB winner, - Price of Love, winner of over $90,000.
It is a testament to the quality of the horse, that he was 11 years old before he had his first sizable crop in America, of the 13 crops of foals he produced in the USA, 6 crops totalled only 31 foals, 15 of these were from 1980 to 1985. In the years that he was in Australia (the stats from Aust are not included in his “get” earnings in America), the two highest-ranking sons of Easy Jet, - Pie in the Sky and Easily Smashed, produced 280 and 570 foals respectively. This makes Easy Dozen’s results as a sire quite remarkable, considering that he was unraced and then exported, he certainly had to do it the hard way.
In conclusion, there are at this point in time (July 2002) approx 12 Easy Dozen mares remaining in Aust, and 4 known siring sons – Instant Reaction, Super Dozen, Legal Dozen and Sure I’m Easy, who will continue the tradition of this great bloodline.
